Justice Select Committee – LASPO

The Justice Select Committee (JSC) has set up an inquiry into the impact of the changes brought about by the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO) from 1 April 2013. The JSC has asked for evidence on a number of different questions including the impact of the domestic violence gateway, the cuts to scope and the impact on the number of litigants in person. The questions are available to view via the JSC website here.

YLAL members have contributed to our submission to the JSC. Sincere thanks to all who contributed. The response clearly demonstrates the devastating effect which LASPO has had on many very vulnerable individuals.

The deadline to submit your own response is 30 April 2014. This will be a very good opportunity to highlight the drastic consequences of LASPO on clients and access to justice generally. We would encourage all members to submit their own responses or contribute to their own firm’s or chamber’s response.

**UPDATE** YLAL’s evidence was published by the JSC on 13 May 2014. You can read our submission here.
