Our 10 year event

Our 10 year anniversary event

On Thursday 23 April we celebrated 10 years of YLAL at London South Bank University. Here are the highlights for those of you who weren’t able to make it.

The evening opened with a speech by our founder, Laura Janes. You can read this here

Our keynote speaker was Baroness Scotland QC and we ended with a panel discussion on the future of access to justice compered by Owen Bowcott of the Guardian. Panel members were Andy Slaughter (Labour party), James Symes (Conservatives), Baroness Jenny Jones (Green party), Geoffrey Payne (Liberal Democrat, 25 Bedford Row), Martha Spurrier (Doughty Street Chambers), Connor Johnston (Garden Court North and YLAL), Solange Valdez (Ealing Law Centre).

Legal Aid Team film

We screened the Legal Aid Team film which you can watch here:

You can show this film at an event about access to justice, to keep the debate going about what we have to fight for in the future. Please let us know if you host a screening as we would love to know how far this goes! Tweet a picture of your screening to @YLALawyers an
d the film makers via @LegalAidTeam or email ylalinfo@gmail.com.

Twitter

You can also revisit the action from the night on Twitter by typing in the hashtag #YLAL10years. Thanks to our live tweeters Natalie Wilkins and Gemma Blythe who made sure all the best soundbites got out there, and everyone else who joined in on the night.

More resources

Our final chronology and programme leaflet are attached below. Thank you to Alice Cullingworth who created the slideshow (too big to attach here at the moment sorry!) and programme, Katie Brown and Deena Blacking who put together the content and Lizzie Frost for the cover artwork.

Our sponsors and volunteers

Thank you to our sponsors Irwin Mitchell, TV Edwards, Garden Court North and London South Bank University, whose generosity made the organisation of this event possible.

We would also like to thank Rachel Francis and Heather Thomas for coordinating the event overall, our committee and our fantastic volunteers on the night: Alexandra Giles, Alp Gokturk, Amy Butler, Amy Murtagh, Andrew Lingard, Charlotte Arnold, Claire Bradford, David Oldfield, Iqbal Hussain, Jenny Mansell, Jessie Waldman, Lydia Andrews, Maryah Mufti, Nancy Freeman, Phil Armitage, Rebecca Ives, Sam Chammings, Serena Fasso, Sinead Nowak, Stuart Dingle and Verity Quaite.

And we could not forget our wonderful guests. We had many YLAL friends whose support to us over the years has meant a great deal and were so glad to celebrate with them. We also had the company of YLALs who have been active throughout our 10 years of life, and who had travelled from the south of England, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Wales and Liverpool. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to take time out to join us.
